MSF Desalination

Drinking water from the sea

MSF Technology — Vacuum Multi-Stage Flash Distillation

La Multi-stage flash desalination (MSF) is an innovative technology for producing very clean drinking water through vacuum distillation. From individual homes to industrial companies — a scalable modular system from 1 to 1,500 m³ of pure water per day.

Isothermal Innovations Inc. represents MSF technology in Panama and Central America.

Use cases

MSF technology is the most widely used method for producing drinking water from seawater — homes, hotels and restaurants, schools, clinics and hospitals in coastal areas, vessels, and industrial projects.

Drinking water

Infant-grade water quality, purified to below 1 ppm (one millionth of dissolved matter). MSF removes not only salt but also mineral and microbial contamination. In some areas contaminated water is responsible for up to 80% of illness — MSF solves this at the root.

Agricultural irrigation

When waste heat powers the equipment, costs are nearly zero — making it viable to use the water for irrigation in areas lacking moisture. Unlike reverse osmosis, MSF does not degrade soil through progressive salinity. It allows agriculture to intensify sustainably.

Fishing vessels

Caught fish must be washed in fresh water before freezing. Waste heat from the boat's engine, with an MSF unit, produces fresh water directly on board — suitable for washing fish, drinking, and general crew use. Works on any type of vessel.

How does it work?

The pressure reduction inside the device causes a marked decrease in water's boiling point. This translates into lower energy consumption and lower cost per unit of water produced. The technology is supplied as a distillation unit with brine recirculation.

Modular system: standard capacity ranges from 1 to 1,500 m³/day; capacity can be increased at will by combining modules. This allows maximum adaptability to the site, especially useful for projects with space or power constraints.

Four key reasons

Alternative energy

Solar, wind, hydrothermal — any renewable source can power the MSF.

Waste heat

Save money by harnessing waste heat from generators, engines, transformer stations, or exhaust lines.

Easy maintenance

Simple operation. Suitable for remote sites with little skilled labor. Optional remote monitoring.

Think Green!

Modern, environmentally friendly technology — no CO₂ emissions, no greenhouse gases.

Flexible power sources

MSF can run on conventional power, renewable energy, or waste heat — reducing operating cost to nearly zero.

Benefits

Extremely low-cost drinking water

By harnessing existing waste-heat sources, MSF produces clean water at practically zero operating cost — viable for drinking, cooking, and irrigation.

21st-century technology

Purifies to <1 ppm. Reverse osmosis barely reaches 300 ppm with new filters. MSF removes salt, minerals, and microbial contamination in a single stage.

No CO₂, environmentally friendly

No greenhouse-gas production. No buildings or complex pretreatment filters needed. No diesel high-pressure pumps — eliminating fuel installations.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's the heat generated as a byproduct of producing electricity, burning waste, or stepping current from high to low voltage. MSF can harness it from diesel generators, transformer stations, engine rooms, motors, exhaust lines, etc.
Can MSF be used after reverse osmosis (RO)?
Yes. RO cannot purify below ~300 ppm. MSF can be applied as a refining step to obtain infant-grade water (<1 ppm).
How much maintenance does it require?
Practically none — total operating time is 330 days/year. The only scheduled downtime is for simple cleaning. It can be fitted with GSM remote monitoring with periodic data transmission.
Do I need buildings to house the equipment?
No. We recommend roofing, fencing, or securing the equipment against vandalism, but no buildings or filtration complexes are required as with reverse osmosis.
Can the water be remineralized?
Yes. A dolomitic limestone cartridge built into the unit is used. In addition, MSF can be tuned to any reduced level of original mineral retention.
How much does the water produced cost?
It depends on the type and availability of waste heat, and on local conditions. Contact us for an estimate based on your specific application.

About us

We are a team of environmentalists who hope to see the advance of inhospitable deserts turn back into green zones full of wildlife and lush vegetation.

Seas and oceans cover 71% of the Earth's surface. By harnessing wasted heat and energy that contribute to global warming, we produce very cheap, affordable drinking water from the sea.

Our mission

To make access to drinking water possible for everyone who suffers from scarcity. We know the road ahead is long. Even so, we have a vision to make it a reality, and we believe this goal can be achieved.

We work to make quality water available to everyone suffering from scarcity, to enable irrigation in areas being lost to advancing deserts, and to give users of technical equipment and transport the ability to harness the waste heat from their own processes.
